Joyce DeFauw, previously Joyce Viola Kane, enrolled in college in 1951 as a freshman at Northern Illinois University to study Home Economics. She met her future husband at church and after three and a half years in college, left to start a family.
Over time she regretted not finishing school and was encouraged by her nine children, 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren to go back to school. She began that journey in 2019, from her retirement home behind a computer. It was her first computer and her grandchildren had to teach her how to use it.
Three years later, she got to put on her cap and gown and received her Bachelor of General Studies degree.
